What is Podoconiosis?
Podoconiosis, meaning “dusty feet,” is a non-infectious tropical disease caused by the exposure of bare feet to irritant alkalic clay soils.
The rich soils of Rwanda provide nourishment and income for rural subsistence farmers across the country. Hidden in the soil is microscopic mineral called silica, ancient glass formed from volcanic rock. Podoconiosis (podo) is the direct result of chronic exposure to this irritant in the volcanic soil. This chronic condition causes swelling, painful wounds, and deformities and ultimately, disability.
How Can You Help?
