Heart and Sole Africa (HASA) began in 2009, as The Imidido Project, in Ruhengeri, Rwanda, to address the needs of those ravaged by a condition called podoconiosis (lymphedema), more commonly known in its late stage as Elephantiasis. The Virunga Volcanic Mountains rise up in the northwest corner of Rwanda and provide fertile fields for subsistence farming. The men and women working barefoot in the fields can develop Lymphedema (chronic swelling) from a silica irritant in the soil which leads to devastating physical manifestations. As a result, those suffering from this condition become outcasts, experiencing the physical, emotional and spiritual effects of being isolated. Many have to beg on the streets to survive.
Heart and Sole Africa was founded by Tonya Huston, a physical therapist with a Lymphedema management specialty who recognized a need in this region while working with True Vineyard Ministries. The focus of HASA is to treat those suffering from this condition and help them to manage their symptoms and prevent further complications. The organization also creates opportunities for these men and women to attain economic independence and provides prevention education, which is critical to stopping this devastating cycle of affliction and ostracism.
As we continue to build awareness through preventative strategies, HASA is committed to integrating podoconiosis care services into Rwanda’s existing healthcare system. By 2030, our goal is to fully transition our operations into our Rwanda-registered organization — Heart and Sole Action — under the leadership of our exceptional local staff, who will work in concert with the Rwandan Ministry of Health.
